Another successful drive down to Puerto Penasco! Saw the beautiful Organ Pipe National Monument on the way and all were happy to see the ocean once we arrived. Right away when we arrived at CEDO (the Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans), we got an orientation from the CEDO intern, Abraham, as well as a lecture on the natural history of Puerto Penasco and the northern Gulf of California. We learned that while the lower part of the Gulf can be miles deep, the upper part is quite shallow (average depth of only 150 ft) due to sediments being trapped in the northern Gulf due to some of the islands that occur in the middle.
Many are turning in early, this windy evening of the full moon since we'll do our first rocky intertidal trip tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. to catch the low tide! I think I will too! More tomorrow.
